An all natural
sleep aid.
Scientific
reports show that Melatonin can clearly help bring on sleep. Many of the
reports on Melatonin herald the use of the hormone, as a god send for people
who experience trouble sleeping. It cited a number of clinical studies in
which “researchers found that as little as a tenth
of a milligram makes dozing off easier, no matter what time of day.” People
also use Melatonin for other reasons than just to restore sleep. Travelers
and air crews are using Melatonin because
it is believed to help ward off jet lag by helping to reset the body’s sleep
clock. Traveling across time zones disrupts the body’s circadian cycle, this
is the rhythms associated with the 24-hour cycle of the earth’s rotation.
Research has shown that groups taking Melatonin “reported significantly less
jet lag and sleep disturbances.”
It is a fact, that when darkness is registered by the eyes Melatonin is
secreted by the pineal gland, which is a pea-size structure at the center of
the brain. All creatures, even single-celled organisms, have internal clocks
that manage a variety of natural rhythms, and Melatonin is believed to be
responsible for regulating sleep rhythms. Studies that were conducted by
Drs. Walter Pierpaoli and William Regelson reported in their book, The
Melatonin Miracle, switched the pineal glands of young mice with those of
older ones. According to Newsweek, the results showed the young mice “grew
decrepit and died in late middle age, but the older ones surpassed their
life expectancies by an average of 30%,”. The theory is that mice, like most
animals including humans, produce high levels of Melatonin early in life,
but that production steadily declines as we get older. By supplementing a
diet with Melatonin, it is supposed that the effects of aging can be delayed
also for people.
